This project designed by new member to the Chenevert Architects family Kirk Copeland (KCA) is a renovation and addition to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, CA. The library which was originally completed in 1991 houses the collection of the Reagan Presidency and the Reagan Foundation. In an effort to expand its mission, a 60,000 sf. addition known as the Presidential Learning Center was added in 2004. This addition features a conference center, classrooms with moveable partitions to accommodate multiple room configurations, and support spaces for teaching programs and seminars. A large main speaking room was added with a balcony overlook that has a glass rail that doubles as a dining area for the Reagan Country Café. The two-story speaking space features a pyramid-shaped wood plank ceiling with recessed lighting reveals along the ridge lines. Large window openings in the exterior wall are fitted with mechanized roll-down blackout shades that match the interior wall finish, creating a surface suitable for image projection. A 20,000 s.f. exterior “Peace Plaza” was added as an exterior amenity.
